Sometimes, you borrow someone else’s dress hoping it will carry the confidence you couldn’t find in your own.

That evening, my room looked like a small disaster. Clothes covered the bed, hangers lay across the floor, and every outfit I tried felt wrong. Not ugly. Not bad. Just… incomplete. I stood in front of the mirror wearing my usual black kurta, suddenly irritated by everything about it the sleeves, the fit, the way it rested on my shoulders. Maybe confidence looked easier in someone else’s clothes. Maybe that was the difference between me and the girls who walked into rooms without hesitation.

It was only a birthday party, but somehow it felt bigger than that. I almost cancelled. Then my friend walked in carrying a dress.

“Wear this,” she said.
I laughed immediately. “Me? In that?”
The dress was bold, elegant, and impossible to ignore. Exactly the kind of thing I thought a confident girl would wear. I kept waiting for the mirror to show someone different. But even at the party, I still adjusted my posture too much, still wondered if people were staring. The dress didn’t change me. And maybe that was the lesson. The next morning, when I returned the dress, I apologized for being awkward in it. She laughed softly.

“The dress was mine,” she said. “The overthinking was yours.
